The Last Day

Today is the last day of 2007, a year which has been both tumultuous and weird in Pakistan. We have seen it all here in this year, with the ouster of the judiciary back in march starting the whole goddamn awful mess we are in right now.

I did go to work today,(yes i do work) and was there until 1 pm, thats about the time that miscreants started their activities again by firing in the air and at a rangers check post, after which me and many other offices were left with no choice but to flee home or wait it out.  Exasperated with it all ,i wanted to wait, but i then got the dreaded of all messages… one that ends with 90 it said “attack on 90, Farooq Sattar dead” i think my heart stopped until i made it to my car and i ran as if my life depended on it!

All round me again as if in a state of deja vu i watched as banks, offices, shops and petrol stations hurried to close their doors as people ran yet again to get home.  Is this our life from now on? to struggle to get to work against the saner reasoning of our mind and then run like rabbits every time a false alarm sounds. Thankfully Farooq Sattar is ok…and so he has clarified on TV.  The outcome of his demise, would be something i would not want this city to ever go through.

So here we are again.. the PPP is all gung ho for elections, The Bald hope has also announced his desire to compete and Mr Zardari was amazingly boisterous and pretty handy with the microphone. The government is at a loss of what to do as the city is closed once more…i say close it down till the bloody elections are over, at least this game of cat and mouse will be finished!! we the people are sick of it all, and to top to all off another year is beginning!!! I wonder what this one will bring, are there any more surprises left? cuz i think we have done it all in 07. Oh by the way Happy New Year everyone, at least the awful charity balls wont happen in the name of the poor tonight. Do they not say every grey cloud has a silver lining?

Of Perceptions & Reaction

Perception is widely defined as the visual representation of an object, entity or idea. What this definition does not include however, is the fact that perceptions often change when subjected to different circumstantial input or stimuli. I still remember quite clearly the perception of the general public in the U.S towards my country Pakistan while I was studying there in college.

It normally used to bounce between “that place next to India” or, for the more aware of them, a social and economic backwater lying in-between India and the sea. In fact so unaware were most people in the US of Pakistan in the 90s that when I won top marks in a presentation in an elective physical geography course, the teacher congratulated me and told me the people in my village”Karachi” would be ecstatic at how far I had come. He was even more baffled when I explained to him (“quite aggressively” I might add) that I came from a city with a population at least thrice that of New York’s.

Usually though an event of some magnitude does serve to enlighten the world of a country on the global map, the misfortune with us was that the event in question turned out to be a total disaster remembered now as 9/11. It was this very event which shook the world and reminded them of places like Afghanistan and Pakistan, and the current perception shaped by this and other such unfortunate events in the recent past, has now turned to “that place next to India, which is full of terrorists”.

To go into debate on this point would be silly as indeed Pakistan has become a haven for bad guys of all sorts, due to the general lawlessness and corruption which prevails here at a grass roots level. However, to just categorize a place as “No Good” or “Most Dangerous” seems to be an over reaction of sorts at least to us humble third worlders. After all many millions like us still live and are happy here, thank you very much!

Normally when this sort of a perception is displayed by the world, the people of Pakistan react in the only way they know. We as a nation tend to be more resilient than others as we face day to day problems which are quite unknown to the advanced nations in this day and age, such as lack of electricity, water, jobs, security, etc. Obviously it is not as if we were blinded by our pride at birth. That we do not know we are living in perhaps the worst of conditions available in this world to its many citizens. But we are still happy to be here, as we feel our roots here. Even when we are traveling to the advanced or first world, after some time we start missing the squalor, the load shedding. Everything seems so bright and shiny, we like it dark and grim.

Or at least that is what we like to believe. The actual perception of our nation as pertaining to the rest of the world is one, which ranges between total paranoia and confusion. We are confused because sometimes the richer nations call us a front line ally state (at least whenever we are needed to serve as cannon fodder), and then in the next breath, they refer to us as harbingers of the same evil we are doing our best to battle. Our leaders obviously do their utmost to propagate the manic notions of “Us against Them” and of a greater Christian crusader type conspiracy to eradicate us barbarians from the face of this earth. We are also constantly informed by our media of enthralling facts like the certainty of our nation fracturing into small states, or highlighting the daily negatives of our lives instead of encouraging hope by small positives. Not to forget the religious sword hanging over all of our heads that is the day of reckoning (which according to our eminent religious scholars is just around the virtual bend!) You ask why? Have you not seen the Masonic eye of the “Dajjal/AntiChrist” in the US dollar bill? (Pun intended). As if God only has this monetary way of letting us know that the end is near!!

We are also depressed because although it seems foolish to the rest of the world, some small part inside of us still love’s this godforsaken place to death. Thus it hurts us that our nation is seen in such a poor light. Some of us would not even depart to other shores, even if provided with a visa; call it patriotism or lunacy. So we humbly request that people just leave us alone! It may be a gutter we reside in, but its our gutter and perhaps in time we can clean it on our own!

Anarchy In Pictures

This weekend was a truly sad one, not just because of a great politician and leader of our country being murdered but what her supporters and other elements did to Karachi in the name of mourning. I present a small showcase of pictures taken by Amean J on the aftermath and riots in Karachi. In the hope that we can learn and educate ourselves in what not to do after the death of a leader!

Aftermath

We watched yesterday as hundreds of thousands descend upon Ghari Khuda Baksh, the ancestral village of the Bhuttos to bury their daughter Benazir in a funeral ceremony the likes of which i have never seen in its enormity or sadness. It was attended by the entire PPP leadership, as well as her entire family.  Her burial took place after friday prayers at about 2:30pm.  Following that an air of utter gloom and doom has prevailed over much of Karachi and Sind.

Due to the precarious situation in most areas of this province, the army was called in to maintain law and order shortly after the funeral. With orders to shoot at sight any miscreant or protester indulging in the destruction of public or private property. Curfew has also been declared in some areas of interior Sindh which were still smoldering with agitators.  I went out to get something for myself in the early evening  here in Karachi and the streets bore the look of total desertion.  The street lights were shut off and no one was in sight. All the shops were closed as well as all the gas stations and there were hardly any vehicles moving about at all.

Personally speaking, i have never seen Karachi like this in my life. Even in the worst strikes and situations the corner shops remain open, even if they do so discreetly. However yesterday evening was like something out of a nightmare. Nothing was open, i roamed around for about 10 mins in my car searching and then realizing the situation went back home immediately.

At least the rioting has stopped due to the army patrolling the roads, but i did not see them during my visit outside. The media is reporting that they are posted on the main artery Shahra E Faisal as well as in the industrial areas. They must be there as yesterday there were reports of several towel factories being torched by miscreants in  the North Karachi industrial area.

It is Saturday the day after her funeral today, and everything is still shut.  I do realize the government announced three days of mourning but at least a few petrol stations and grocery stores should be open for this city in which millions live? god forbid if somebody needed emergency medical care in these circumstances!! Several Ambulance services have also stopped working due to lack of petrol.

Furthermore the media is reporting the involvement of  militant elements such as Baitullah Masood and Al Qaeda in this assassination. No kidding? these lunatics have been after the poor woman since the day she got back here. Still there are rumors circulating about other elements being involved in this fiasco, as well as whether the shrapnel or the bullets or the sunroof killed poor BB. What does it matter i say? it was all due to the unprovoked brutal attack on her and now she is gone forever.

If i was asked to describe the relentless tirade of information coming through my TV set in one word it would be repetition.  If i were to do the same for the situation in my country with the elections looming (yes according to our caretaker PM they are not cancelled) it would be grim!!

A Dark Hour(revisited)

It is now close to 3 am in Pakistan as i write this. Still the mourners and activists of Pakistan’s People’s party are roaming the streets of various cities in our land chanting slogans like “Blood for Blood”. In Karachi alone more than a 100 vehicles have been torched, on Main Shahrae Faisal miscreants mixing in with activists, stopped cars and robbed the occupants before setting them alight.

Their have been instances of people entering neighborhoods in Karachi..screaming to the house occupants to extinguish all lights coming from the houses to join the mourning or suffer. There is aura of death hanging over this city, the streets are deserted lit only with the smoldering remains of vehicles or tires burning indiscriminately on the roads. As i mentioned earlier the National Hospital had been also set on fire, which is just difficult to absorb. Banks have been also looted and many petrol stations set ablaze, two on Dalmia road alone. Shops which did not close immediately have been fired upon, sometimes fatally and set ablaze. Many government symbols and buildings have been attacked and damaged in Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukher as well as around the country. In short one can see flames in all parts of the country on the T.V. Even the railway stations have not been spared with station cash and station terminals being set on fire and destroyed, these include Rohri, Ghutki and stations close to Karachi.

Nawaz Sharif has graciously expressed solidarity with the PPP and has now announced his parties boycott of the upcoming elections. Their are off course only 11 days left for the elections. My feeling right now is ranging between disbelief and horror at what is to come in the days ahead. As many ammunition shops have been looted, the results of which will lie ahead. Surely this nation cannot heal itself enough in 11 days to hold a proper election.

Doubtless we are all currently shocked, but do we realize that whether right or wrong Benazir represented a party which has one of the most popular vote banks and ground support. That her death has left a power vacuum which will be filled by whom? I fear the worst possible scenario happening here. That this was a well planned move on the part of the deadly militant minority and that they plan to replace her voice in the political circles of Pakistan with that of their own.

Of the PPP i am certain it is doomed. The reason being that it has lost the last credible Bhutto which could lead it to power once again. The party leadership is obviously in shock at this moment but in time they will realize that Benazir is not easily replaceable.

I myself am no great supporter of Benazir or her particular brand of politik. However i do realize that she did represent the moderates among this mob, that she was a very intelligent and charismatic leader and that her death will have very far and very resounding repercussions on the future of my country.

The best tribute one can give her can be seen on the faces of the people she worked with on a day to day basis, they seem like they cannot come to terms with reality of her demise. That to me shows the power of her..which will be in abundant display by the expected sea of her followers at her funeral, the power of her people.

We are not a nation of terrorists

we are not a nation of militants

this great nation is one of the labor

who toil and work hard to earn their living”

Benazir Murdered Updated

Right now… the National Hospital in defense in Karachi is on fire

Right now.. the entire nation is sitting glued to their tv sets watching in horror at what is unfolding

Right now..various area of Karachi, Peshawar, Sialkot & Pindi are being looted and damaged by angry activists and mourners

Right now Benazir’s coffin is being shifted to an airforce base for flight to her ancestral burial ground with her family who are on route from dubai

Right now the entire PPP is stranded without leadership at Zardari house, most of them crying in disbelief and shock at what has just occured

Right now the president has declared 3 days of mourning and an oath to find the people responsible for this tragedy

Right now Nawaz Sharif and his party have announced a boycott of the elections in solidarity with the PPP

Right now i am wondering why we are only ever united in grief as a nation?

Benazir Murdered

In what can only be described as a horrible turn of events, Benazir Bhutto chairperson of the Pakistan Peoples Party has been murdered by a suicide attack on her vehicle as she was exiting her last rally in Rawalpindi. Right now the streets of Karachi are scenes of chaos.. with people running helter skelter to find any modes of transport available to get home safely. Those with cars are ignoring all traffic rules and as i just made it home, there have been several accidents on the way that i witnessed. Armed youth fired in the air as they forced people to close down shops on main Tariq Road, and there was a mass exodus of families running for cover. There are wide spread reports of arson and riots in the Lyari & Sohrab Ghot areas of Karachi and both the national highway and the super highway has been sealed off by armed youth burning tires. People are stuck for the last hour on main Shahra E Faisal as their are massive traffic jams there. I do not think there is any hope of the election’s continuing as the President is now in an emergency session with his advisor’s.

A few moments ago the President has announced that the impending elections on Jan 8th have been now suspended, the new date for elections will be announced later.

I would advise everyone to stay indoors and stay calm wherever they are in Pakistan. Please remember trying to flee home amongst this chaos can be dangerous.

Of Oaf’s & Offal’s

Pakistanis as a race tend to be amongst the greatest of discarder’s present in today’s’ world. We often cut loose our hero’s from their umbrical cords without as much as a sliver of thought. Be it cricket or politics or business, we tend to forget, as if there is nothing such as the past.

At no moment is this sentiment on better display then the second day of “Bakra/Goat Eid” where the piled up offal’s of yesterday’s slaughter are gathered from front porches by the ever vigilant K.M.C and carted away for immediate burial. We are a nation which does ritual sacrifice by the millions, nay billions these days ( in tribute to the rising prices of goats and cows) and still many of us go without 3 proper meals a day.

This Eid was no different as I was informed by the various, media channels on goats and cows being bought in lakhs of rupees by would be benefactors solely for the purpose of executing their beauty. In fact around these parts there are people that spent millions of dollars on their ritual offerings every Eid, and chose to display them in huge tents outside their houses for one and all to see. Pretty funny is it not? I guess we still miss the days of grandeur of the Mughal courts and do our best to exemplify them at every corner. Perhaps an Akbar lives in each one of us?

Speaking of offal’s… January 8th is just around the corner. The political campaigns are off to full swing in most parts of the country. By political campaigns here we usually mean rallies by past oafs where the attendants are paid by either food or cash to attend. Usually before elections the big feudal’s organize and show of their largess by open “Langars/Free For Alls” at their Deras/Residences for the masses to come eat and get lost in merry making, all for the price of a single vote.

Disappointed by our electoral process? do not be! What did you expect? Intelligent people debating on whom to make their leaders by proper electoral process? Puhleeeze lets not forget we are living in the land of the pure. Not that we can say a lot for other claimants of democracy in this region, FYI Modi just won from Gujrat, across the border where he helped engineer one of the biggest day time slaughters of the bearded ones. So much for the true voice of the people eh?

I for one have decided to stay out of this whole mess by spending election day at home, relaxing in the fake glory of all is well as long as I do not hear of it. Yes I am going to play the ostrich rather than take part in the “Great Election” or as the great bald hope puts it “Our referendum”. I just wonder who will be there to pick up the residue of this nation once these elections are said and done with? Will they allow Aitizaz to caste his vote? Only to drag him back to confinement from the ballot box I think! Will there be a clear outcome? Oh definitely!! An outcome of more confusion!  So here’s my salute to the New Year. My resolution I think shall be to forget about it quicker than the last one.

Interviewing Ayman

After doing the necessary business of acquiring goats by the usual means for this Bakra Eid, i came across the “hilarious news” that Al Qaeda would be now conducting an open interview. Yes my friends.. good old Ayman will be answering your questions and has requested all media outlets and journalists to send in the questions to Al Sahab. Al qaeda’s media wing for their answers by his own holy self. He has also requested on several Jihadi web sites to keep the questions short and concise. So i thought since I have nothing to do at the moment here’s my list of questions and Ayman’s supposed answers to them in an imaginary interview.

1) Where is Osama Bin Ladin?

Assalam walikum dear brother in Islam, do you not engage in greetings, are you not a Muslim? What is wrong with you brother, Osama is in a safe place, no one knows where he is, not even me his 2nd in command. We like to keep it that way so we can never be captured. Why some days even he does not know where he is, we load his sheesha that way.

2) Why are you and Osama still hiding? If you indeed have the popular support you keep proclaiming across the Muslim world?

My brother, the problem with the Muslim world is that they are all hypocrites!!! Except for Mullah Umar who I had to lend my scooter to escape from Tora Bora, they all secretly fund us via hawalas and yet openly declare they are front line allies in war on terror. You want me Brother to trust people like this? Hah I would trust an infidel more than these so called Muslims!

3) Whose war are you fighting?

You know what Brother Faisal, I am getting sick and tired of your foolish questions, it is your war we are fighting, it is the Muslim’s war against the white pigs out there, do you not realize you are all at grave danger? I know you do not, you look haraam your actions speak of your haraam thoughts, you ask questions but I know you are thinking of Paris Hilton! I will not answer any more questions about our great jihad!

4) Islam is supposed to be a religion of peace Mr Ayman, we are not supposed to indulge in the killing of innocent people across the globe to propagate it, do you realize what a bad name your organization has given our religion?

My brother you are blind, you do not know anything, who cares about our reputation? what matters is that the white man is now afraid of us. You feel cringy at airport scanners and at visits to their lands? Well we feel proud when they scan you and ask you to take your socks off! They are afraid of you!! And as for the the killing of innocents? Who the hell told you they were innocent? They are all involved, yesss all involved in a grand global conspiracy of the Jew against you and me, but you will not understand why the very clothes you wear are designed by them, I am disgusted with you! Who is this gap you are wearing, I think the gap is a big one between your ears!

5) Why does Osama not come out in any of the videos any more? Is he sick?

No No No, the great sheikh Osama can never be sick, he is invincible, he is the chosen one, he is merely resting. Why does he need to come onto video when he has people like me to do that for him, there is no need. Off course he has a little trouble making water, but that is just temporary.

6) How does Al Qaeda contact people every time they wish to release something like an interview or a video tape? How is the most untraceable organization in the world so hooked up digitally they can receive questions for an open interview?

You will never understand the power of al Qaeda Brother Faisal. We can contact anyone anytime, we can send videotapes by a number of couriers, we can use those same couriers to send bombs as well, would you like me to send you something by Fed Ex tomorrow? It is easy you just seal the envelope…

7) Mr Ayman I know how to courier things, I wanted to know how “your people” are untraceable and digitally hooked up at the same time? I mean how can you publish things on the internet if on the run all the time?

Who says I am on the run? I am not on the run, and as for all your silly disbelief at our powers of communication I shall say but one thing, it is called “Wifi”

8.) Would you like to explain the purpose of your organization? I am at a loss to understand what you are trying to achieve Mr Ayman?

Off course you are at a loss! You are a bloody infidel!! Just look at you, how can you understand the grand scheme, we wish to eradicate all disbelievers from the face of this earth and then establish a caliphate with the great sheik as our leader.

9) You wish to therefore kill billions of people in the name of Islam and then form a caliphate for governing those who are left?

It is not us that will do the killing, we merely sit in caves and send out messages, and their own people will kill them.

10) So basically you just instigate things?

We are the chosen ones, if people wish to rally around our cause then they do, all we provide is the impetus the rest is up to the people.

11) Mr Ayman do you realize you come across as the most barbaric, neanderthalic bunch of psychos roaming this planet?

One man’s Psycho is another man’s savior Brother Faisal.

I would like to add that the above is just a parody of what I thought would constitute the interview if I was ever given a chance to meet Ayman. It is by no means meant to offend anyone or to label anyone as anything other than what they are. I will not be receiving any parcels for a few days. Thank you Eid Mubarak, Merry Xmas, Happy Holidays and goodbye.

Celebrating Freedom

2002-05-29-may-musharraf-a-nice-dictator-504.jpg

My brothers and sisters, who live in this great country and around the world. Whose blood flows green rather than red and who love this place like no one else can, rejoice!!! as from Dec 15th we are now totally and absolutely free. The emergency has been lifted and all is now well. We can buy our goats and cows in total peace and tranquility as the great and impartial people in our exalted government will make dead sure, that not a stone is unturned or an effort left in making this upcoming election a clear and transparent one!

Yes my friends our great leader the pious and true General err President Musharraf will call upon hand picked pets err impartial foreign election observers who will be overdosed with great food and even better booze and observe the great leaders grand democratic elections. Where there is a level playing field and all parties are participating with great gusto, except for a nameless few who no one gives a toss about like that guy with the long beard and the has been Mr Khan.

Sure a few people have vanished, a few were tortured along the way & the most widely watched media group is still shut down as it refuses to give up on its principles and we made a few more changes to that Soddy piece of parchment but so what? Is it too big a price to pay for this country? remember my friends “Sab se pehle Q League” sorry my tongue seems to slip today, “sab se pehle Pakistan”. Not to worry the new supreme court will make sure that all the impartial and independent crap done in its great halls pre Nov 3 is washed away with the most diligent of scrubbing as it goes about following its Masters coat tails. As it should off course!, what else do these people wear those black robes for dammit?

Even better is the amazing news today that we have sent our interim crony err Prime Minister on the much required Haj. He needed to go as it is an immediate requirement to tip the holy scales in the governments side. After all we cannot hope to rig the hereafter can we? Maybe we need to come up with an agency who can look into that as well, pick up a few people, make things happen! To keep the exalted PM company, so that he does not get bored, he’s taken along a group of only 50 people or so. Imagine the frugality of this great gem of a person!! as he saves money for us to spend on more guns with every move he makes!

What more, today we have solved our great benefactors eternal problem as well. El Presidente in his graciousness has now pronounced that we now know where Osama is. No No No, he is not sitting in a yacht in the Mediterranean like we thought. neither does he live in Pindi, he is in Bajaur!!! and will soon be arrested. The only problem we are facing is that, since our great army is busy trying to bring Swat and its 200 militants under control we have no one to spare to get him. Perhaps we can send Kamran Khan to get him, but he might take 50 hrs of coverage to bring him in, and if he wears that red suit again who knows he might scare Osama off! Hmmm volia, i have it! we shall now scan the entire Bajaur district via predator drones and take pictures of all the bearded men there, which somehow seem to be a lot. Then we shall analyze who is Osama by his dental indentations and the slight mole on his left eyebrow, and send in our elite troops to catch him! Perhaps we can set his catching date as well, how does Jan 10th sound! we can put in our new fairly elected government into power and Osama out of power at the same time.

Ahh how lovely it is to breath in the air of freedom, how delicious the joy of the upcoming Bloody Eid, when the roads run amock with the blood of a million animals, we shall all feel so cozy and warm inside knowing that the new year will be even better than this last one for Pakistan. We shall have thrice the number of balls and charities parties, where we shall all drink till we are sane and party like mad!! for the poor earthquake victims off course. They really do need us to party hard for them!! they should be thankful though since in Pakistan, things just keep getting better and better, obviously as we are the first among the 4th world. Yes the 4th world, it does not exist until now, but that will not deter us from being its founder member! because where we can go, no nation has gone before!
