Unilever reality show claims the life of my friend Saad Khan

By Farrukh Ahmed

A little over a week ago, I got one of the most shocking news of my life. An ex-colleague and a good friend Saad Khan passed away during the shoot of a reality show being shot in Thailand. The show was organized by Unilever as part of their ad campaign for Clear Shampoo for Men. Saad died of drowning during an under water challenge which involved pulling weights across the water.

Hearing the news of a friend passing away is in itself devastating, not to mention he was merely 32, a father of 4 very young children, aged between 7 & 2. He was probably the most cheerful person you’d ever meet, and was the 1st in everything among friends, now including leaving us all with memories.

Apart from my personal account, Saad’s death is becoming a closely guarded secret by the multinationals involved in the campaign of the show. Ironically, that has become the very reason of it being widespread internationally on blogs and social networking websites.

Unilever and Mindshare, the 2 advertising giants involved in the promotion of the show are making all efforts to cover the incident across the media, to the extent that all blog posts are being slowly blocked. I still can’t understand why this is being done, but with this post, I want to set some facts straights and publicize some questions that I’m sure would arise in your minds as well upon hearing the details of Saad’s death:

Here’s what is known about the show / event which took his life:

According to the details given by Unilever, the fateful challenge involved 4 participants to carry a 7kg weight on their backs across a pond. Saad reportedly drowned as he lost his balance. It is also reported that he suffered a cramp and could not stay afloat, and yelled for help before going down for the last time. It is to be noted that he was an excellent swimmer and had an athletic build of height 6’2″.

GEO news went on air with Saad’s news for the first time on 28th August at around 5 PST.
The Head of Corporate affairs Unilever Pakistan (Farishtey Gati Aslam) spoke to Geo claiming this to be an accident. She said that the participants were given the option of wearing life jackets but Saad opted out of it. All safety measure were taken.
She never spoke about the 7 kg bag which was fixed with each participant during this stunt, or the fact that none of the participants wore life jackets and the jackets were NOT mandatory.
She also said on air that Unilever is also trying to compensate the family and is in touch with the family, friends etc.

As a representative of the grieved family & friends, I would like the following questions to be answered:

  1. Corporate Social Responsibility of Unilever & Mindshare in the making of this reality show? Was there ever a document regarding the planning of the event?
  2. Were the safety precautions adequate at the time of shooting any stunt?
  3. Were the participants given any safety trainings / briefing for the stunt?
  4. What are the credentials of Unilever & Mindshare to host and manage a reality show? Any corporation while undertaking any project develops a project plan / manual. We would like to see the project manual for the show.
  5. Were the contestants insured?
  6. On what criteria were the candidates selected? Did the organizers inform the participants of potential danger involved?
  7. If the stunt involved danger of drowning, why was the life jacket optional especially when there was a 7kg bag affixed with every participant?
  8. How may lifeguards were present? In other reality shows like Fear Factor, there is usually 1 guard for each participant who is responsible to look after that individual. Why did it take around 15 minutes to search and take out the body when there were cameras watching the precise spot where Saad went down?
  9. The pond in question is located in Chatuchak park in Bangkok. The pond is reported to be muddy with precise depth unknown. Why was the pond selected without measuring the depth and being tested by professional safety officials before the stunt?
  10. Was this place randomly selected or through a series of approvals?
  11. Why is Unilever / Mindshare avoiding the media on the subject if they took the necessary precautions?
  12. Has any staff from Unilever (the main organizer) actually seen the place before / after the incident?

There are many more such questions in the minds of people who have heard or read about the incident. We demand an official explanation from the officials at Unilever and Mindshare in an open forum.

I was probably the last among the friends to see Saad Khan alive a couple of days before he took off for Thailand. He was very excited and though never told me about the show, said there was a big surprise for everyone out of this trip!

Please also take part in the Official Facebook Community.

May Allah bless Saad Khan’s soul & give his family (wife & 4 small kids) the strength to overcome this irreplaceable loss. Ameen

Sex ed row hits local school

In the last week 14 parents have led a protest against the CEO of Dawood public school asking for her resignation. They demand that she step down because she introduced into the curriculum a grade 7 biology book which has a few pages on human reproduction.

I have not had the chance to view this book but according to my sources it outlines the basic organs as well as stresses on contraception and the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases. These parents are also upset because Ms Sabrina Dawood the schools foreign educated CEO has also introduced pant/shirt and skirt for girls in the school unform instead of the traditional shalwar kamiz.

Private Institutions Director Mansoob Hussein Siddique has informed some news sources that upon checking of the schools syllabus nothing controversial was found and thus its license is not canceled.

To me this out roar just points out the building tension between two segments of our society. Although it would be wrong to blame and brand the parents or the schools administration with labels, the fact that this is being made out to be about religion speaks of people unwilling to accept change. I for one do not think there is anything wrong with teaching our children about sex or reproduction or warning them of the dangers of unprotected sex. If the Quran our holy book can speak of it and against pre marital sex in open terms what are we shirking back from? Each child reads and completes the Quran before they even reach grade 5 do they not?

Why do we want our children to be so uninformed? Or do we think that reading about it in a biology book is worse than watching it performed live on tv? Because I can bet most of the parents protesting have cable in their homes and what children catch as input while flicking from one cartoon channel to another is known to us all. So why create a ruckus over educational distribution of information which is to safeguard the kids rather than encourage them towards promiscuity.

In any case I think parents who have reservations should definately now check the schools syllabus before entering their kids in the program. This school is using books imported from Singapore and thus the cultural values will be of the culture where they are printed.

Our schools should also learn to take parents on board in key changes to syllabus/curriculum as they are directly concerned and should be part of the decision process. If this was observed, then the whole brouhaha would not have taken place.

92 operation against MQM, truth revealed

In 1992 the Army and rangers of Pakistan began a massive operation against the  MQM in Karachi. Those of us who were old enough at that time all know what took place next. Everyday on TV there were pictures of a supposed map of “jinnahpur” an alleged plan of MQM to separate Karachi from the rest of Pakistan. This map, claimed the forces conducting the operation had been found from various sector offices of MQM. In addition to this there was wide spread fanfare about 100′s of torture cells of this party found and destroyed in Karachi. Since the last 17 years MQM has been branded as a thug party, a party of traitors and those who want to use violence to break this nation apart due to the information presented in this “92 operation”. This operation and the information I have described above was also used to “justify” the hunting and slaughter of more than 15,000 MQM activists across Pakistan. Those who could get away did by any means necessary because the entire security apparatus of this nation was being used to hunt them down and exterminate them.

A few days ago, many of us watching ARY TV were shocked to hear the words of a Brig imtiaz (former chief of IB & Incharge Int Wing of ISI during 1992 Karachi Ops) that this “92 operation” was carried out on false and entirely made up information presented to the rest of us as facts. I repeat there was “no jinnahpur map” & “no torture cells” and according to him the operation was carried out to get rid of a criminal element. Geo news anchor and respected journalist Kamran Khan had the following to say on this.

I find it no laughing matter that Brig Imtiaz chooses to divulge “the truth” on this matter now when everyone in the MQM has been screaming their heads off on this for the last 17 years. The government in power at that time is now claiming they had no knowledge of this operation…Really? 15000 men women and children slaughtered, the entire city of Karachi under siege by the forces, door to door murder and no one had knowledge this was going on?

Since the CJP has taken it upon himself to right the wrongs of the past, will he under the light of this current revelation conduct an enquiry into why this operation was actually carried out and how many people died as a result of it? Will he put on trial the men responsible for so many deaths, tragedy and the vilification of an entire political party?

Dr Farooq Sattar had the following comments on this revelation.

Sadly enough, those who have been on the forefront of maligning the image of MQM for the last few years are now quiet. When will they now explain why is it that they indulged in false accusations? When will we hear Imran Khan speak on this matter?

I urge the people of Pakistan to open their ears up and hear the truth. We have been misled, duped and fooled into believing what the powers to be want us to believe! When are we going to see things as they really are? When are we going to be able to discern fact from fiction?

As for the residents of this city, most of us are now fully aware of the truth, those who are not will see it in the days to come. The truth is supreme and will always surpass lies, even if they are 17 years long.

Sugar lords making money

sugar-price-313

As Ramzan our holy month of fasting begins prices are being jacked up day and night by our esteemed and honest shopkeepers. No one is suffering more at the altar of loot and pillage more than those who are buying sugar. We are told daily that there is a shortage of sugar in Pakistan.

“Really?” I asked one shopkeeper as I finalized my purchases. “Oh yes, sir ham kia karen peeche se hi mehngi aarahi hay” So here is the game, they claim sugar is being sold to them at exorbitant rates and this is partly true. However how does something jump 20 rs or so just before the peak consumption time arrives in Pakistan?

Very easy, say I have a sugar mill  that is I am a grower/feudal( im daydreaming its a 14 hr long fast ok!). I instead of selling my produce to the local market at standard rates, decide to fill my warehouses with the product. In order to guarantee safety from official checking for hoarding I collude with parlimentarians who are usually either my distant cousins or even my closer family members. Once that collusion is achieved the calls for importing of sugar before the crises arrives are ignored in trade bodies and chambers of power. Instead people eagerly await the cashing in time and when that arrives, then everything goes haywire like it is now.

The government, or at least the part of it that is still working with those 9-12  Ramzan timings are doing what to ensure the supply of this commodity to the masses? They claim that utility stores are selling sugar at the official rates of 38 rs but if you go to one you can see the wailing throngs outside and decide for yourself what the truth is. It ain’t too sweet let me tell you that much

We the people are off course to blame as well, we are part of the same cycle. We will all prefer to go nuts together before the fasting month begins instead of waiting and buying a bit later at a more convenient time. The way we act not only pushes up demand but makes for a sort of panic induced buying situation in which the sharks/shop keepers prey on what they can. For gods sake, Ramzan is about self control as well, so what makes us turn up at every grocery store like a biblical exodus and transform our cars and means of transport into mini arks, piling in everything we can!!

What makes me even sadder is that even amongst all this, places like bachat bazaars are also busy fleecing the masses. We are all in fact exploiting the masses and we will not stop, I think until they break the doors of these warehouses down and take what they want.

The day of that event is not far away if the elite, the government and the distribution mafia of this country do not give the poor any respite.

Mushing our luck?

Pakistan to me seems to have some sort of fixation with its past. We are always reliving past glories or talking about how great we were, and how things used to happen so many years ago etc etc. Till recent form in the T 20 version of the game, our only retorts to people inquiring of our poor state in cricket was to remind them of 92 and how we can come out like cornered tigers. The current move by a sher squadern senator to move the SC for a directive from the Feds to start “criminal proceedings” on the good general seems to be more symptoms of this age old virus in our country.

It seems we have learned nothing at all in our 62 years of existence. We are even now, trying to solve what has happened in the past rather than what is happening in the present. Today is the 1st of Ramzan and if you go to the closest utility store, you can see lines of people outside while fasting in this heat to get cheaper flour or sugar or any edibles for themselves. However we do not care about trivial problems like this, but what happened on Nov 3 2007 and the coup much before that is what is stopping us from going forward(allah ke fazlu karam se). That is the crux of all our problems. We have restored the angel of justice to his pulpit and now all we have to do is crucify the demon in khaki and we will live happily ever after!!

Lets be honest with each other. The good general as we all know courtesy our media today, did not actually resign because he wanted to. It was part of a deal between him and the current government and the establishment with two foreign dignitaries to seal the promise. Thus when the government says there is no love lost between them and the good general, exactly who do they think they are making a fool out off?

To top it all off, if they really want to and believe in putting things in the past right by bringing culprits before the law, why don’t we start with the first waxed mustache rather than try to clip the most recent one? What’s stopping us from holding a Yahya Khan responsible? So what if he is dead? Since when has the august court of Pakistan cared about trivialities such as death or uniform or the need of the hour?

Funnily enough, the lawyers have suddenly seemed to decide that they are above the law in Pakistan, as clearly witnessed by their violent behavior with police and journalists. Thus they and the political mechanisms that have empowered them have now decided to take revenge for everything that was ever done to them as they are off course such puritan and spotless individuals themselves. However if I stand corrected and they are doing this for the good of our country, may I in my esteemed foolishness try to turn their cannons towards the rising level of prices and the non availability of things like “food” and “electricity” in the month of Ramzan? Here is a wild idea? Why not make all the judges we have fired food inspectors and let them take out their anger on the errant shopkeeper! I am speaking of the PCO 2 judges, fired by the PCO 1 judges, god even typing this makes my head spin.

If nothing else works, we can all fly off to China as our current “great leader” seems to enjoy doing every other month or so. To further the cause of his country off course. Better yet, we can all say we have back problems and somehow end up In a cushy flat in mayfair in London town. I have heard the pakoras of south hall are particularly fresh in Ramzan.

Or we could wake up, look in the mirror cracked by now and realize that the people of this country, the Aam junta need help, alleviation from poverty and education to make a future for themselves. They also need justice for the thousands of cases pending in the dockets related to the present, which is the responsibility of those with the suo motto fever. All in good time though, we must try for treason one of our bravest and most decorated soldiers first.

The spirit of Pakistan

Where ever Pakistan is concerned these days, a media storm is not far off. We make the news consistently for all the wrong reasons but lately a bunch of positives has come to the fro which I thought I should share with my readers.

First off I would like to show you what a leader is, a true patriot who even when surrounded by Indian literati and  who’s who of their community takes a barrage of hostile questioning and refuses to back down, on anything concerning Pakistan. He may have made blunders in his end days that will haunt him for ever but to me he is still a hope for salvation. Surprisingly the Indian’s agree.  The length of his interlude in Delhi recently, is so long that the videos are divided into 13 parts. So watch at leisure!!

General (rtd) Musharraf\’s interview part 2

Secondly there is the book written by Jaswant singh in praise of Jinnah for which he has been unceremoniously kicked out of the BJP. After watching these interviews and the decision of the BJP what is a Pakistani supposed to think? I have some Indian friends and several on here who read this blog from India. They have always maintained that the public of India is adamant for peace with us and it shines through when you watch these videos. In fact it seems to me that no one wants war except for certain political/militant groups in India and Pakistan who have based their political identity on warmongering with each other.

I was speaking to my father yesterday, a man who saw partition and its horrors as he migrated here from India. He claims the same as Mr Singh, that Jinnah was a reluctant participant in the partition due to Nehrus attitude forcing his hand, he would rather have had a unified India. If this is indeed the case then should we even consider each other as enemies or a nation separated by circumstances and destiny. Is this not history giving us proof that inside we are one?

As far as Indian politicians are concerned, they can make plans for our downfall as much as they want or restrict anyone or anything positive about our country. The tide of change is gathering, they should realize the following.

Pakistan is not going away as a nation, we will not dissipate under any onslaught be it from Baluchistan or Taliban. Speaking of which a blogger friend has highlighted how the new U.S immigration form lists Baluchistan as a separate country. Shocking how the world perceives us sometimes, shocking and sad as everyone thinks we will be dismembered.  However I believe that until we give up nothing can ever take Pakistan away from us, and this nation does not give up. So try what you will bapus of Hindustan we are here to stay!!

Breakfast at Dawn, Go green episode

Before my 15 minutes of fame are up, I must tell you where I was in the morning of the 14th of august. Sleeping on breakfast at dawn live with Naveen Naqvi as I tried to catch up to what she and the other guest sanasaleem were talking about. Women really have too much energy in the morning!!! You can view the show or the lack of my performance below.

Please note, Naveen is the only show host to fully incorporate twitter and the techie arts into her show. The rest of the media world is still playing catch up.

For the record I was extremely honored to be on this show, I even got to meet “the flying horse” Samiullah, someone who’s magician like dribbling skills on the hockey field were part of my childhood. Going on live after him was pretty un nerving in itself but once I got the hang of it I think I was able to convey some thoughts.

Feedback on this post is a must, laughing is optional and will not be appreciated!!! Gawd I need to get on that treadmill!!! Enjoy

14th Aug and aftermath

When on the morning of 13th Aug sid gave the rallying cry for the #blaggers to assemble it felt surreal. The #gogreen team pioneered and headed by our mad scientist/blogger Farhan Masood had been working hard over weeks for this day. The idea being to turn twitter and facebook into a virtual sea of green by changing the display pics to a patriotic background for everyone. The second part of this idea was what the rallying cry issued for, to take the hashtag #Pakistan to the top of the trending topics on twitter.

Doubtless many of our citizens laughed at the frivolity of this plan, many went a step further and criticized this patriotism as jingoism and bandwagon politics. However I for one felt something when sid gave the call and I saw the hashtag #Pakistan start flashing across my screen as tweeter after tweeter joined into this cause, it was as if we had taken over the twitter sphere even for a few hours, and as more and more tweets exploded and echoed across my conscience, I felt my heart swell, my eyes moist up and a warm fuzzy feeling. Not because it made a difference that we took Pakistan’s name to the second most talked about topic on twitter, but because I saw the spirit of Pakistan break the shackles of negativity, greed, selfishness and distraction to emerge as one, with one voice and that voice was emphatically heard and then amplified by mainstream media across Pakistan.

It said, we are not dead, we have not withered into the night, we are here to fight and we will salute the incoming dawn of hope with one note, one discourse, one scream that of Pakistan Zindabad!!!

Long live Pakistan, long live the bloggers of Pakistan and may we continue to make a difference, because we aim for things others discard, we shall prove again and again that we are what counts in this great land!!!

Local government suits locals

A few days ago, as I was leaving for work in the morning, my guard handed me a small piece of paper saying government officials had driven by and         handed this to him saying it was a ticket. I unfolded it and saw that the ticket was for the excess water flowing out of my storm drain and onto the road. it said that if I kept on expunging water out onto the road the local government authorities at the naib nazims office would clean up the street and charge me for it. It also gave me the choice of taking care of the issue myself in 24 hours after which they would make another spot check.

The purpose of telling you the above story is not because I have complaints at this treatment or that I feel wronged by this act. It is to illustrate to you what happens when a system in Karachi works and as far as my own neighborhood is concerned works daily. I actually felt proud that day as me and my father drove past the newly constructed jail road flyover on our way. Proud in the local government and their efficiency in maintaining a clean street in front of my house, proud that we finally have a system which is actually performing. This is just a teeny tiny example of the work that the CDGK has been doing over the last 8 years. True Naimatullah was a great visionary and he left a great many plans started for the CDGK when Mustufa Kamal came in but to take each and every one of those plans,  complete them and then go on to do tons more  almost superhuman work, demands not just dedication and party loyalty it demands self sacrifice. Sacrifice for public office, something we quite routinely crib about to our hearts content about our government lacking.

In a city of millions of people, 95% of whom “DO NOT” respect the law and ply roads daily with the most haphazard of driving techniques, policed by a force which is both foreign to the city and corrupt and unresponsive to the core. Divided in its land rights among 13 agencies and all this given to a young man with no prior experience of heading such an undertaking. This is not the most astonishing part, the astonishing part is that this man Mustufa kamal came through. He might have stumbled a bit in the monsoon, but hey I saw many a orange clad CDGK worker the next day draining and pumping water or moving it to the side. I even saw our mayor till 2am at night on tv channels roaming the city trying to solve its problems. So how and why did he achieve all of this?? To me the first step which seriously empowered our local government was the devolution of powers in the Musharraf era, which meant that now every areas  naib nazim got a budget and control and didn’t have to go running to the provincial ministry with his hands spread at every undertaking.  It also enabled the strategic planning which is on display to happen.

This also meant that the people of X area elected a person from X area who lived amongst them knew most of them by name and “responded” to them. If I I had to choose which category to give credit to this CDGK authority it would be on their response!! fly overs and underpasses aside they really were there when the people called. That is what matters anyways in Pakistan, the aam junta want “sunwai” first, as before this no one gave a damn.

If you do not believe me call up their response number 1339 right now and you will get someone on the other end who notes your complaint gives you a  queue number like a professional and the team arrives at the destination to sort out the problem within that working day. Yes I know this happens abroad in a matter of hours but we are talking about a city in which previously we  kept knocking on government doors but no one arrived for months. We are talking about a City government which had to impose taxes on us just to keep their machinery running as the provincial governments funding dried up suddenly.

Right now every one of us has been informed that the local system of government is a failure and things will go back to as they were before this working structure came into being soon. This, without even taking the people who live here in confidence? Has anyone asked us what system of government we want in our areas?? Does anyone care?? If this is how the new system is beginning I think the time is not far away when we will be all back to square 1. Is that what Karachiites want?

In his last interview to dawn Mustufa says his family does not even include him in their plans anymore as he is never there. What more do the citizens of Karachi want from their mayor?

Karachi online

Is this time for real?

Its been a few days since the news of Baitullah Mehsud finally going out in a drone attack surfaced. The initial problems of confirmation were obviously there as this has been heard of before, but when the U.S authorities showed drone footage to our authorities the final word was set in stone.

It somehow feels wrong to celebrate someone’s death. Still the death of a madman who had nurtured and trained wings of fidayeen squads to suicide bomb our country to almost the brink, is nothing to weep about either. However the fan fare that is being presented on our main stream media as if we have gotten rid of the entire Tehreek E Taliban as well as the stoic silence of our religious leaders is baffling to me.

I do understand why they could not condemn him in life but now that he is no more are we still going to respect a madman? Are we going to still go around shaking our heads and justifying his actions in some ludicerous way to our selves? As for our media? They all seem to be in the “breaking news” mode 24/7 calling Baitullah mehsud our Osama and all that. Please read the following carefully “There are many more from where Baitullah came from and only one Osama bin ladin” cue dr evil music…

The fact of the matter is that “Amir sahab” which he was referred to by his men was a bit of a mystery to the world. At times he behaved like a pantomime villain with his reluctance to show his face and at others he seemed capable of intelligent thought (as when he invited journos to meet him last may)  What’s even more mysterious is that intelligence on him had been provided thrice before to the U.S authorities but each time they failed, once a missile was even launched but it turned out to be a dud. So why now? Has something changed in the halls of power? Please note that the drones are the weapons of spooks not the U.S army and it does seem like the obama administration has brought fresh approaches to the cloak and dagger kilt. Were they keeping him propped up in the past? These are questions to which there are no answers.

They say footage from the attack clearly showed him on the roof with his wife and half his body was blown away by the missile hit. Baitullah Mehsud who roamed around with a chador over his face, the leader of the TTP, the most feared man in Pakistan was standing in the open on a rooftop? What was he doing, flying a kite? If the authorities can release this footage it would be great, but wait must be classified! Like his burial which quickly happened without anyone attending!

There has also been talk of the shurah of the Taliban meeting to select a new leader since yesterday. Well where are they? The drones can find Baitullah, but not a shurah of Taliban deciding who the next boss is? We need to find out which area they are in surround it and kill em all right? Or does our constitution give them cover to elect their representative also? Even if it does not we have NRO specialists up our keester so no prob Talibunnies.

News is also filtering in that Qari hussain, the leader of the fidayeen squad and rumored to have mystical training powers is also dead. I hope this is the truth as well because this will really make a difference. this is a man who has really made us as a nation and our forces suffer.

We have built these men up as some sort of super villains a methodology we seem to have inherited from our Masters of the fair skin. Due to this these people are able to hype the myth and influence people to follow them, to give them arms and to feed them for their lunatic cause.

I for one still think this is one more shadowy chapter in a war which we only hear off  & never witness and that scares me more than Mehsud alive or dead. The thought of what is really happening in our northern areas.

Breaking News: The war is still on, we have not won yet, we will win when no one is ready to lead the TTP. Not when three fresh monsters are lobbying for Mehsuds seat of power.
