Digging up Stonehenge

stone.jpgAfter nearly four decades of uninterrupted peace, the ground beneath the inner circle of the blue stones at Stone henge is being dug up. Stone Henge as most of us know is that mystical feature on the Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England comprising of circles of stones set upright in the earth for a purpose lost in the ages.

The aim of this excavation led by two of the UK’s leading Stonehenge experts – Professor Tim Darvill, of the University of Bournemouth, and Professor Geoff Wainwright, of the Society of Antiquaries is twofold.

First they want to establish a precise dating of the period of the double blue inner stone circle, the first to be placed at stone henge. Secondly they hope to prove that this area was visited by people all over England and the rest of the world to benefit from its healing energy. This theory has recently found some scientific proof as most of the burial mounds around this area are of people maimed or hurt in some way. Meaning it could have been that the Stone Henge was a healing place, for those who had suffered in life.

Obviously a place with such mystical presence and energies has gathered around itself many many myths ranging from the most common druidism’s place of worship and sacrifice to Arthurian legend and even extra terrestrial origins.

One of these legends also predicts a disturbance at Stone Henge every 5000 years leading to a major catastrophe. I cannot help but feel a slight tinge of a shiver as i read the report on this excavation, for in my opinion some things are better left alone and without explanation.

Fitna, Released

After having watched Fitna released on youtube by Geert Wilder, i am disappointed frankly. I thought perhaps his hype would merit something startling, but instead he just takes ayats from the Quran..translates them totally out of context and accompanies them with extremely violent and emotional imagery from recent history. Its nothing fascinating or startling to see one man’s hate for a religion being exhibited through video and sound. Its simply a hate flick, a well hyped propaganda film, a dud!!

Give me about 3 days and i can do the same on any religion or subject…taking isolated clips by hate mongers present in every culture and society and weaving them in nicely with effects.

See for your self

Enter The Groper

With the famous words “We call upon Makhdoom” the PPP put Yousuf Raza Gillani as its prime candidate for the post of premiership of this land of the pure.

He was further described in many interviews that followed and on talk shows which will be tearing him apart very soon, I would think in about 15 days of his swearing in as a man of principal etc etc. Some on this forum have also nominated him as an unswerving bulwark against political pressures and such.

His family has been at the forefront of politics in southern Punjab for at least all its recorded history. Showing once again that the “Party of the people” has opted for a family hierarchy then a united choice of the populace. They have installed him as our prime minister in the same fashion they gave the chairperson ship of the oldest and largest political party of our country to a teenager, based on his blood ties alone.

Exactly what are the qualities the prime minister of Pakistan must have?

a) He must be politically well known and influential in the various power spheres to keep the office running, as there is nothing else which can keep a Prime minister of this land up other than nepotism and skull duggery CHECK

b) He must be a yes man to the powers to be, these can be of various forms. It can be a President or a Don or a certain monetary institution controlling his strings, but he must have strings! CHECK

c) He has to display a marked similarity to the most common mentality of his people, as aptly pointed out by a contributor here public groping is en rage these days and you tube shows us the soon to be PM is awesome at that sport CHECK

d) He must always, always have an exit strategy, which Mr Gillai has aptly pointed to in his reference to his party deciding whether this is a permanent or temporary position. CHECK

Suffice to say, we have gone from a financial savvy would be groper, just ask Condi Rice to a political savvy one.

I think the celebrities of our land are in rapture; perhaps some old musical nightingales might get a few ministries even. Due to their.. ahem undying pursuits in the betterment of the nations PM’s lifestyle!

Ahhh, sorryI must end this rant as the electricity has just gone into asylum again, excuse me as I grope for a candle. UPS going low SUBMIT…SUBMIT!!

Death of a Dreamer

Two days ago on Wednesday the most eminent visionary and dreamer of the last century passed away in Sri lanka. Arthur C. Clarke was not just the man who gave us fascinating works like “2001 A Space Odyssey (originally his book “The Sentinel”) but he was a visionary of the highest degree.

When he was a child growing up in western england he would buy space rags, or old comics which made their way to England from America as the ballast of ships, which he would buy for 3 pennies each and dream about space and its exploration.

Not many people know that during World War II Clarke was young officer in the Royal Airforce. In 1945 he proposed that geo stationary satellites would become the communication media controllers of the next age. Without his vision we would not have GPS or global communication or so many of the other things which we take for granted today.

Many also do not know that in 1952 his book “the Exploration of space” was used by rocket pioneer Wernher von Braun to convince President John F. Kennedy that it was possible to go to the Moon.

In a 1962 edition of Life magazine, he predicted th use of cell phones and how they would link the world together so densely that individuals would not be able to escape the clutches of society even if they wanted to. He also spoke at that time of electronic libraries and Hi Def Electronic screens.

Needless to say, not every person gets it right when they dream, for we all know that the flights of fancy we engage in sometimes help us fall quite flat on our faces. For example the chairmen of IBM T.J Watson once predicted that the world would need at the most 5 computers.

In short this was a man so brilliant, so astute in his knowledge of technology and what the future might bring, that many of his dreams turned into a reality in front of his own eyes. Some even pioneered by him. The space elevator is another one of his yet unrealized dreams which can be used to jettison payloads into space with a fraction of the cost of today’s method, that of burning thousands of tons of rocket fuel. It is currently in development and will use a cable 50,000 kms long.

If it were up to him, we would already have a super computer capable of artificial intelligence to the level of his character HAL. His end would have been perhaps a transfer of his grey matter into the digitized world so he could live on inside his creation as his body gave up, but this was not to be.

As a Sci Fi fan i would like to take this moment to salute one of my hero’s Arthur C. Clarke may you always live on with us through your words and work. May your life continue to give confidence to those who dare to dream.

R.I.P A.C.Clarke

P.S Till the end he also believed that we are not alone, suffice to say he was hardly ever wrong about such things.

Why do a lot of us hate?

Often this question is raised in media circles around the world. The West does not understand Muslims and they wish to know why it is that Muslim people hate them so much.

No it is not because Islam teaches them hate, it is not because we are fundamentalists or because we want you to join us or die. We just want to lead our lives according to our own beliefs and we want to do that in peace.

We do not want to be meddled with, or led politically because we do not know any better. We do not wish to be educated by your leaders, they are as corrupt as ours. We wish to be simply left alone. So for god sakes stop believing what you see on CNN, the IMF does not really help third world countries, it destroys them economically. Its an instrument of economic colonization. Below i am pasting a link to a video by Imran Khan, in which he talks to women, ordinary Pakistanis, Mullahs and what not about why America is hated so much in this country.

It will serve to enlighten some of us as to what this nation is saying. What the entire muslim body is saying. Some idiots resort to lunacy to protest, that does not mean all Muslims are like that. Click below to find out what the ground realities in Pakistan are and why so much hate is generated against the U.S, perhaps you will understand the truth.

Imran Khan’s Video on Islamic Hate Against America

True we have many faults ourselves, we lack a lot of things as a nation. However it is up to us to sort our problems out. Whether we do it in 50 or a 100 years, no one has a right to push us into a war of resentment. WE DO NOT NEED GUIDANCE, THE WORLD DOES NOT NEED YOUR POLICING. THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT TERRORISTS SHOULD BE LINED UP AND SHOT, BUT EXAMINING THE ROOT CAUSE AND ENGAGING IN DIALOGUE IS THE WAY OUT, NOT FORCING COUNTRIES TO JOIN THE SO CALLED “WAR ON TERROR” STOP THE WAR, GIVE PEACE A CHANCE BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!

Community Portals

020.jpgA community portal is basically defined in various dictionaries and geek speak as a place where people of common interest gather virtually, to engage in activities and networking. In the recent years we have seen a huge rise in community portals in our country. So here is my take on the three major types in existence today!

The first one is the social one. People thrive on interaction, and nowhere is it more visible than Face book or Orkut. Obviously it gets a bit weird with random strangers poking each other and the adding of virtually anyone who has spoken to you once on your profile etc etc. No, absolutely no one believes you have 534 friends in real life people!!!

So why do people sign up to portals like this?? Yes yes I admit it, I joined up to seem like I was digitally conscious as well. I thought it would be a bit of shugal, but it’s turned into something of a monster, eating away at my time as I sit and click through my friend’s pages everyday looking for something funny, something boring, gossip? Ohhkaaay back to writing mode from the confession booth. A thought to note on this aspect, portals for social networking appeal to the voyeur in us. Yes… it is true, no one admits it but we all like watching people, their pictures, making snide comments about them in private messages etc etc. In fact if someone made an application to see everyone’s private messages on Facebook and Orkut , half the relationships in Pakistan would fizzle out instantly! Let’s also not forget the chichora virtue of these social sites. We in this country rarely have any place to meet and interact with members of the opposite sex openly. No dear reader I am not desperate. I am speaking of the general population who isn’t invited to 4 Gt’s and Parties every week. Not that I am either!! However it is a medium is it not? Though often exploited by people for nefarious purposes as well, still it is a good way to hook up. Where there is demand, supply shall stress its bonds to meet it they say.

Right on to the second type of portal available and in vogue these days which is basically the professional networking one. Notables on this list would be portals like Linked in, and quite recently Monster and Jobsindubai.com. The benefits of hooking up to something like this is quite obvious. Even if in a good job one can always test the waters by means of these portals and online resumes. Want to know what you are worth in Dubai or anywhere else in the world? Sounds inviting does it not? Actually these portals have led to a tremendous growth in the horizons of us Pakistanis and made the careers of quite a few people toiling away in our country.

Last but by no means the least is the information based community portal. These online sites are a step-up from the individual blogs one is used to reading. They represent a collective of writers, thinkers, poets etc who contribute with their own take on the events of the day, or just something they think should be shared. Obviously this can lead to a lot of frivolous commentary on things such as Shairs on the back of buses. However some of these portals for example Pakspectator, or Chowrangi or Chowk.com make for a lot better reading then our newspapers of the day. Simply because there are almost no censors and one can see freedom of speech being exercised in true Pakistani style here. Plus most of the news and articles one reads on these portals are totally unbiased and the common mans view of things. No wonder even the foreign news services have made it a point to keep an eye on these collective info blogs to get “the real picture”

The best thing though is that whether its profiles or news or resumes that you read, or interact with, you at least know that you are engaging in something more constructive then say watching the tube or daydreaming. So go ahead write on someone’s wall, send a picture, poke someone, send a video, try your hand at writing a piece, check out your fantasy career and how to go about acquiring it. Make that click my friends, who knows it, might even save or change your life!! Who knows what’s out there until you explore nahi? A new world awaits you Columbus.

Controversial Verses Part I

A few blogs ago i posted my distaste for the movie Geert Wilder is making on Islam called “Fitna” the reasons for my reactions were simple as i do not think we need more hate in this world.

I received numerous comments regarding this movie and different opinions of my religion Islam, among them a reference to certain Ayats in the Quran which clearly belong to the stone age.

Now before my fellow Muslims declare me an infidel i would like to ask them to comment on the following ayat. I saw this on Debbies Blog “The Right Truth” and i verified it.  This verse does exist and is further verifiable by the historical fact that our Prophet {PBUH} referred to it in his last address or Khutba, calling for the action to be such that no injury is made to the female.

Obviously the fact that today is womans day is not lost on me, or the strategic timing of such a post, but still i think discussion leads to answers.

Surah An Nisa Verse 4.34
ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Men are (meant to be righteous and kind) guardians of women because God has favored some more than others and because they (i.e. men) spend out of their wealth. (In their turn) righteous women are (meant to be) devoted and to guard what God has (willed to be) guarded even though out of sight (of the husband). As for those (women) on whose part you fear ill-will and nasty conduct, admonish them (first), (next) separate them in beds (and last) beat them. But if they obey you, then seek nothing against them. Behold, God is most high and great. (4:34)

To me basically it is giving the husband a right to beat his wife as a last resort to save their marriage, should she not stop her infidelity. This beating does not have to be taken by the wife who can apply for khula or separation. However i totally fail to understand how domestic abuse can be permitted. Could someone with more knowledge please clarify this?

I would like to request that this not be viewed as an attempt to demonize Islam, but to understand it better by a Muslim.

U.S Election 08, Hope for change!

Hmmm Obama is the sort of politician that i would definitely give a few 100 Nawaz Sharif’s for!!

Obama’s election campaign deals with change in his country, change in small minded neo con politics they have been dealing with in the last 8 years of the Bush regime. Some of his key goals are to get out of Iraq, have a summit with all Muslim nations and work for good governance. His becoming president will also see an end to the “old boys network” thank god!

Whether we adhere to the republican or the democratic side, i think all of us have to agree that Presidents Bush’s war mongering has lead the world to a brink of anarchy and chaos. Another republican neo hawk in that oval office and we could be witnessing the beginning of a global crises from which we might not even emerge.

It may be easy for us to sit back here and say, why bother with their elections. Well they have us as a front line ally state and change in governance is going to lead to a change in their policies towards us. So yes we should bother, we should watch and we should know what is coming. The above video just serves to illustrate how featured we are in their foreign policy.

I pray it is Obama as he seems to be more for world peace than the rest. His spirit and confidence is truly admirable. Go Obama!!

P.S : No i am not in awe of him because of his “Muslim” childhood, the guy clearly speaks from his heart and that is what every nation needs as their leadership, someone who really gives a shit!

State Of Our Collective Mind!

In recent reports more than half of us involved in the daily grind of some sorts are facing mucho depression and anxiety related illnesses here in Pakistan. Te reason for this huge problem is quite simple to me. We as a nation are utterly naive and totally overconfident in anything we can imagine. We deal in fiction rather than ground realities! Let me outline a few basic “Common thoughts” most of us have had or heard from our friends in the past days.

a) We thought elections would bring democratically elected leaders into power who would work on the mandate they have been voted into office upon.

We shall describe the above as fantasy A, the leaders do not have a clue as to what they are doing and have not been able to even select their PM or the Chief Ministers of the respective provinces so far. They keep blaming the GHQ when in 16 goddamn days they have not achieved co census on diddly squat

b) By this summer as the K.E.S.C has been privatized they must have done something for the power problem facing our city, as they are basically a monopoly and can earn much deniro if they provide running power for all throughout the summer!

Right ummm well the K.E.S.C has just said that their is a shortage of 700 MW in their plan for Karachi this summer, which basically means most of us will be waking up drenched in our own sweat sans power the whole summer as usual. They efficiently predict 12 hrs of power outages every other day.

c) After the elections the parties will do something about the various forms of inflation in witness today.

The parties can do nothing! the international prices of everything from oil to food to washing powder are going through the roof, i am not even going to touch upon precious metals and the like. No not even Scatland has some magical wand he can wave and make petrol go back down to 53 Rs again. We have to now face the reality of picking between our daily necessities simply because we cannot afford them all. While saying this i am automatically excluding anyone riding an SUV, as they don’t care if petrol was the price of gold or water.

d) Our economy because of the GDP growth seen in the last year or so is getting better, creating more jobs and prosperity to come!

Well lets just put it this way, when a government wants to increase GDP figures the easiest way to do so is to create artificial demand for consumer items through financing. Yes we can get anything from a car to a hairdryer on easy installments today and this is the reason why. The shortcut credit bubble keeps blowing up…and up… and up.. till it bursts and collapses on itself. This is why the banks auction lots are full of cars for repossession. The reality is that the biggest sector of the Pakistani export market, that being textiles is on the verge of collapse. They employ about half the population of our laborers as well.

e) As soon as Musharraf goes out of power the suicide attacks will stop!!

Yeaah right, “news flash” the people engaged in these suicide attacks are not doing them to get rid of Mush, they think all of us.. yes repeat slowly allll of us are non muslims and deserve to die.

f) As soon as the Judiciary is restored they will fight for the rights of the common man!

Yes sir off course thats what they were doing when they signed on to a military coup against a democratic government in the first place!! Remember these same judges took oath under a PCO. These are no saints or rebels fighting for us, its another facade of the same names in the same corridors.
g) It cannot get any worse! we are at the bottom of the barrel

Ah.. the greatest of all our fantasies, i need not even bother here as we shall all be witnessing what worst looks like pretty soon.

I think we should all go out and stock up on liquids, guns and ice cubes. Definitely ice cubes before they go up in price as well. Here is something to ponder while you are rushing to the grocery store

Insanity in individuals is something rare — but in groups, parties, nations, and epochs it is the rule”

Women’s rights Blooming in Iran

We have all by now heard the various media luminaries of the western world utter phrases like the following about the treatment of women in Islam

a) They are like cattle, hidden in floor length burkhas and forced to work all day long in their households.

b) They have no rights at all, and are forced to suffer the humiliation of polygamy, domestic abuse etc etc etc

Some of this is true, but today’s news should serve to break a few myths about islamic law and its treatment of women. In Iran today a court has ordered a Muslim man to pay his wife her due share of dowry/Mahr promised to her at the time of marriage. Now here i feel it is important for me to define to my non Muslim readers what mahr means. In Muslim culture “mahar” is an agreed upon sum in the Nikahnama “Marriage document” to the bride by the groom payable upon her demand. Usually in many cases this is only a symbolic sum and not our form of pre nups.

However a certain lady in Iran, having been promised a mahar of 124,000 roses in her “Nikah nama” has chosen to demand the said amount in full bloom as she thinks her husband has been very stingy with her throughout their ten years of marriage.

The humorous part is that the courts have upon her complaint seized the flat worth Usd 66000 belonging to her husband, until he pay her this sum in roses.

Typically a long stemmed rose costs bout USD 2 in Iran per rose. Thus we can all arrive at the end result that the groom in question is in deep shit, err petals i mean.

So what do we get from this bit of news?

“Even in Shariah law and under Islamic governments, women are protected and well aware of their rights”

“Never ever marry an Iranian women without having a trimvarte of lawyers read your Nikah Nama”

“Pray to Allah that our womenfolk here in Pakistan do not catch whiff of this”
